More bicyclists seem to be on the move than ever this year, whether for basic transportation or to get some exercise riding alone or with family. Bike Week gives us a great opportunity to share some basic education about the rules of the road and safety pointers.
Some key messages:
Motorists must give bicyclists 5 feet passing room in many municipalities (about half a lane). Three feet is mandatory in all other parts of the state.
Motorists and Bicyclists must obey all traffic signals and signs.
Bicyclists and Motorists must use turn signals.
Motorists and Bicyclists must be especially cautious at intersections and driveways.
Bicyclists - Be visible: lights at night are required; bright clothing and daytime running lights make you more visible.
On the roads, Bicyclists and Motorists must ride and drive with traffic.
Bicyclists - Be predictable, not weaving in and out unpredictably. Wear a safety-rated bike helmet.
Motorists - Don’t park or drive in bike lanes.
In roundabouts, Bicyclists are advised by MDOT to ride in the main lane; Motorists are advised by the Secretary of State not to pass bicyclists.
Motorists & Bicyclists - These are especially good times to practice the Golden Rule - treat each other as you would like to be treated - and follow the Rules of the Road.
